Material Composition of Self-Adhesive Labels

Self-adhesive labels typically consist of three components: the face material, the adhesive, and the backing paper. Together, these elements determine the label's appearance, adhesion quality, and functional performance. The face material is the outermost layer; it serves as the surface for printing text, graphics, barcodes, and other information, and is the part directly visible to consumers. Depending on specific requirements, materials such as paper, PET, or PVC may be selected for the face layer. Paper offers excellent print quality and low cost, making it common for standard product packaging, whereas plastic film materials-offering superior water and abrasion resistance-are better suited for products requiring greater label durability.

 

The adhesive layer is situated between the face material and the backing paper, serving primarily to bond the label securely to the product or packaging surface. Adhesives come in various types-such as permanent and removable-to suit different environments and application surfaces. Permanent adhesives provide strong bonding, making them ideal for labels intended to remain in place long-term; removable adhesives, conversely, allow for easy detachment and are frequently used for temporary labeling or applications requiring label replacement. As adhesive performance directly impacts how securely a label adheres, the choice of adhesive must align with the intended use.

 

The backing paper serves to protect the adhesive layer, providing structural support and safeguarding the adhesive before the label is applied. During production, the label design is typically printed and processed onto the face material before being combined with the adhesive and backing paper to form the complete label assembly. Application simply requires peeling away the backing paper to affix the label to the desired location. Backing papers vary in thickness, stiffness, and release characteristics; selecting the appropriate type can enhance convenience during both label production and application. In summary, the face material, adhesive, and backing paper each play distinct roles, collectively forming the complete self-adhesive label.
