Plastic films are widely used materials in the packaging industry and can be categorized into various types based on their raw materials and properties. Common examples include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyester (PET) films. Since these films differ in terms of transparency, flexibility, strength, and heat resistance, the appropriate material must be selected based on the specific characteristics of the product being packaged.

Polyethylene (PE) films offer good flexibility and water resistance at a relatively low production cost, making them popular choices for food packaging, shopping bags, and household goods packaging. Polypropylene (PP) films provide excellent transparency and strength, along with good heat resistance, and are frequently used in food packaging and composite packaging materials. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films offer good transparency and processability, allowing for various packaging formats; however, the specific material chosen must meet the requirements of the intended application.

Polyester (PET) films typically exhibit superior strength, heat resistance, and abrasion resistance, making them ideal for products requiring high-performance packaging. For instance, PET films are often used as the outer layer in certain food and composite packaging applications to enhance overall strength and stability. Additionally, functional films such as nylon (PA) and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) offer advantages in oxygen barrier properties, moisture resistance, and puncture resistance, making them suitable for specialized food products and items with strict preservation requirements.

Plastic films can also be classified by application into categories such as general packaging films, heat-shrink films, cling films, agricultural films, and composite packaging films. Each type possesses distinct characteristics; for example, heat-shrink films contract when heated, allowing the packaging to conform tightly to the product, while composite films combine the strengths of different materials to improve overall packaging performance. As the packaging industry evolves, the variety of plastic films continues to expand, leading to increasingly diverse applications.
